Denotation is the literal meaning of a word. It is the dictionary definition. In terms of images, the denotation is literally what is happening in the image.
Denotation and Connotation Practice
Directions: Look at each of the still images from films below. In a Word document, write what the connotations (feelings, emotions) and denotations (literally what's in the image). Explain how both the connotation and denotation add to the sense of horror in each picture.
